Livestock Shows Continue At NCM Fair

The North Central Missouri Fair continued today at the fairgrounds, with 85 entries in the sheep show.

Nanette Gorsett of Carrollton was the lone entry in this year’s Ladies Lead Line, which kicked off today’s events. The pee wee show drew several entries and was followed by the regular show. Results from the sheep show will appear in Monday’s Republican-Times.
Dairy Show
A total of 18 head of dairy cattle were entered in Thursday’s Dairy Show at the fair.
Colton Hardy of Browning showed the Supreme Champion Dairy Female, a Holstein (four-year-old). A Holstein (aged cow) exhibited by Emily Schmidt of Laredo was named the Reserve Champion Dairy Female.
Showmanship honors went to Derrek Hardy of Browning in the junior division and to Emily Schmidt in the senior division.
Derrek Hardy exhibited the champion Holstein, with Colton Hardy exhibiting the reserve champion Holstein. Emily Schmidt exhibited the champion Jersey.
Earning ribbons in the show were Colton Hardy, 4 gold; Derrek Hardy, 3 gold; Laura Hardy, Browning, 4 gold; Tawnya Hardy, Browning, 4 gold; and Emily Schmidt, 3 gold.
Goat Show

Poultry & Rabbit Show
There were seven exhibitors showing 36 animals in the poultry show on Wednesday.
Trevor Simmons of St. Joseph had the grand champion and reserve champion entries. Ribbons went to Orren Beck, 4 blue, 1 red, 1 white; Juliane Beck, 1 blue; Jacob Hall, 4 blue; Kidridge Griffin, 6 blue, 1 red, 1 white; Rachel McIntosh, 2 blue, 1 red; Cru Taff, 5 blue; and Trevor Simmons, 10 blue.
The rabbit show had 14 entries. Garret Thomas of Polo had the grand champion while the reserve champion belonged to Andrew Putnam of Chillicothe. Ribbons went to Ryan Henry, 1 blue; Elizabeth Eller, 1 blue; Rachel Nowland, 1 blue; Amy Torrey, 3 blue; Garrett Thomas, 3 blue; Jessica Coats, 1 blue; Emily Torrey, 2 blue; Alexandra Ewald, 1 blue; and Andrew Putnam, 1 blue.
Flower Show
There were 214 entries judged during Thursday’s flower show, coordinated by the Grand River Garden Club.
There were 34 exhibitors with Neva Chenoweth having the most ribbons awarded, 30. The “Missouri Green” Best of Show went to a tree leaf arrangement entered by Martha McRae. The most unusual flower entry was a fruit and vegetable arrangement, using hedgeball, radishes and tomatoes, entered by Libby Fewins. There were also several junior entries this year.

Activities for the North Central Missouri Fair included 39 youth enrolling 222 exhibits in the Rock Barn. The number of exhibitors and exhibits closely matched entries in 2007. Projects covered a variety of subjects including arts and crafts, home environment, photography, child development, etc.

Casey Turley received first and second place recognition in the special woodworking category sponsored by Moore Construction and Woodwork. Matheson Knapp and Logan Trickel were recognized with honorable mention in the same category.
In the Jarden Home Brands Ball-Kerr Fresh Preserving Award, Michaela Jaycox was recognized for her blackberry jelly entry.
Senior Division
Thirty individuals exhibited 174 items in the Senior Division of the Rock Barn. Displays came from nine towns and two states.
In the Jarden Home Brands Ball-Kerr Fresh Preserving Awards, the following individuals were recognized for their canned goods: Loretta Ray received first place recognition in the soft spread category with Sally Morris receiving second place recognition. Lana Snider received first place recognition in fruits with Loretta Ray receiving second place. In the vegetable category, Loretta Ray and Talma Holt received first and second place recognitions, respectively. In the pickle category, Lana Snider received first place and Mitch Snider received second place recognition.
The Bessie Chambers Award for the most food-related entries went to Loretta Ray. She also received outstanding exhibit ribbons for her cherry jelly and tomato entries. Ms. Snider received an outstanding exhibit ribbon for a pickle entry. Marilyn Lynde was recognized as an outstanding exhibitor with her embroidered luncheon set.

Horticulture
There were 24 persons showing 67 articles of fruit, field crops and vegetables in the horticulture judging. This is the lowest number of exhibitors since 1995. Items were shown by indnividuals from Chillicothe, Hale, Humphreys, Independence, Buckner, James-port, Brimson and Trenton.
Entering articles this year were Aaron Kerr of Chillicothe; Kellin Ferguson of Hale; Emily, Amy and Terry Torrey and Steven and Judith Urich of Humphreys; Lana Snider of Independence; Mitch Snider of Buckner; Lucille Smith and Herb Griffin of Brimson; Bob Reeter and Jan Woody of Jamesport; and Dale Ellis, Charles Hoffman, Lucille Fletcher, Dale and Caroline Southers, Von Gass, Luetta Lambrecht, Rhonda Johnson, Doris Kennedy, Freddie Griffin and Ethan Griffinn of Trenton.
Tonight’s events include include motocross and ATV races at the grandstand, beginning at 7 p.m. Sign-in begins at 4:30 p.m., with adult tickets set at $8, pit passes at $10 and tickets for children ages six to 12 set at $5. Children five and under are free.
Free entertainment at the Rock Barn courtyard includes the band “Cheap Guitars” at 7:30 p.m. Those attending should bring lawn chairs.
Saturday’s event kick off with the beef bucket calf show at 8:30 a.m. in the livestock pavilion, with the regular show to follow. The horse show will be held at the North Missouri Saddle Club, beginning at 10 a.m.
Saturday’s evening grandstand entertainment includes the demolition derby, set to begin at 7 p.m. Adult tickets are $10, with pit passes set at $20 (no one under 12 admitted in the pit) and tickets for children ages six to 12 set at $5. Again, children age five and under will be admitted free of charge.
